Spotlight on: AVA (ADVOCACY FOR VICTIMS OF ABUSE)
Kyle Kelly, the AVA Regional Coordinator for the Midwest Conference, is available to speak to groups for special events or retreats about the realities of domestic violence and what can be done whether you are a victim or friend. She is especially passionate about presenting her material to youth groups to enable them to recognize and avoid teen dating violence. - Local Advocate Training can be arranged for your church or a group of people who want to learn more about what can be done to help those in abusive situations. In October 2008, Kyle Kelly trained 35 people at the Deerbrook Covenant Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri. This group is now equipped to recognize abuse and know how to effectively assist.
Two special, short programs Kyle can conduct for a group or retreat are "In Her Shoes" and "Anticipate." - “In Her Shoes” is an activity that gives participants a sense of what it is like to walk “in her shoes” as a victim of domestic violence over the course of many years. The scenarios in In Her Shoes are based on true stories – the experiences of women with abusive partners as told to us by them. The stories reflected typify the complex and dynamic nature of domestic violence, while making known barriers that battered women face as a result of domestic violence. - "Anticipate" is an exercise created as a way to generate discussion about safety planning for domestic violence with older victims and persons with disabilities. This exercise is designed as a game, recognizing that people often learn best when having fun; thus facilitating discussion in a non-threatening atmosphere. For information on these programs and others, contact Kyle.
